The study lasts three academic years (i.e. six semesters), 180 ECTS credits. Candidates for admission to this study program must have completed a four-year high school. The professional title that is acquired is Baccalaureate/Bachelor of Mathematics – teaching major
The main goal of the study is to provide students with knowledge and skills that qualify them for access to the second cycle of studies and enable them to work as baccalaureates in mathematics for teaching. During their studies, students acquire knowledge and competences in various areas of mathematics that enable them to understand the necessary mathematical systems at all levels of integration and in a wide range of appropriate problems. Students also acquire knowledge from a group of pedagogic-psychological and methodical-didactic subjects and during their studies perform methodical practice in mathematics in elementary school. During the internship, students follow the preparation and delivery of the teacher-mentor’s classes and independently prepare and realize a certain number of teaching hours. Depending on the choice of electives, students have the opportunity to acquire additional knowledge in various areas of mathematics, teaching methods or computer science.
Learning outcomes specific to mathematics
Diploma holders are able to:
- formulate and solve problems in general mathematics at the level of typical introductory mathematics courses,
- formulate and solve problems from the basics of various areas of theoretical mathematics, such as analysis, algebra and geometry, as well as the basics of applied mathematics.
Learning outcomes that are specific to teaching mathematics
Diploma holders are able to:
- effectively interpret instructions in elementary school curricula when planning mathematics lessons,
- combine different teaching methods and sources of information with the aim of ensuring the quality of mathematics classes,
- use different knowledge evaluation techniques and harmonize them with teaching and learning goals,
- implement simple math projects.
Generic learning outcomes
Diploma holders are expected to:
- develop analytical and problem-solving skills,
- develop research skills,
- are able to successfully communicate their ideas using different media,
- use computers in different contexts,
- are able to work independently as well as in a team,
- efficiently use operating systems, as well as computer applications in the field of word processing, spreadsheet calculations and business graphics,
- use literature in English and other foreign languages related to mathematics.
The baccalaureate diploma in teaching mathematics qualifies the holder for independent teaching of mathematics subjects in primary schools.
