Today, at the session of the Government, the enrollment quotas for regular students in the Department of Mathematics – in the direction of Theoretical Computer Science of the Natural – Mathematics Faculty and the Department of Computing and Informatics of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and UNSA were increased.
Previously, 30 full-time students were planned for each of these departments, and 80 self-financing students at ETF and 30 at PMF.
Given that there is a pronounced imbalance in the supply and demand of these personnel on the labor market in the field of the IT industry and that the Sarajevo Canton Government is committed to increasing the number of students on IT study programs and providing all students interested in these programs the opportunity to study for free, Minister Aleksandra Nikolić and Minister Today, Adnan Delic asked the government to increase the quotas for enrollment in these departments.
“I am glad that the Government accepted our initiative and increased the quotas for 250 newly enrolled full-time students at these two departments, of which 100 students at PMF and 150 at ETF. This is the first step and we are certainly still working on finding the best model to meet the needs of the market in the area of the fastest growing industry in the Canton area. I am happy that now not 60, but 250 of our young people have the right to study for free at these two departments, and I believe that we will have a great generation of new young IT experts”, said Minister Delić.

As part of efforts to harmonize the supply of professional staff and market needs in the field of IT industry in the area of Sarajevo Canton, the Minister of Economy of Sarajevo Canton Adnan Delić met today at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics with the dean of this faculty, Prof. Dr. Nusret Drešković and representatives of the Department of Mathematics, and the rector of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA), Prof. dr. Rifat Škriljelja.
The goal of this meeting was to find a temporary solution that will bridge the large deficit of personnel in the IT industry.
Representatives of PMF are aware of the needs of the labor market, as well as the need to harmonize study programs with the needs of the economy and the development of new, global markets in order to achieve compatibility and reduce the gap in supply and demand.
In this regard, after an extensive discussion, joint conclusions were reached, the implementation of which will contribute to the popularization of the theoretical computer science study program and the first professional study of Information Technology at the Department of Mathematics, and ultimately lead to the strengthening and expansion of this study program.
“I am glad that in the representatives of the academic community we have interlocutors with whom we speak a common language, and I am glad that today we reached conclusions that are the first step in reducing the barriers between the educational process and the needs of the IT industry,” said Minister Delić.
He added that the proposals of the representatives of the department are in place and that the Ministry of Economy will do everything to support the implementation of today’s conclusions.
“After today’s meeting, according to the joint conclusions, we will start the procedure of renaming the Department of Mathematics to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, which, we believe, will contribute to the popularization and greater number of applications for this study program,” said the head of the Department of Mathematics, Prof. Dr. . Zenan Sabanac.
Rector Škriljelj pointed out that the necessary transformations and reforms are needed in order to harmonize study programs with the needs of the labor market.
“Here at PMF, we have excellent study programs that we can, with the support of the Government, further strengthen and meet the needs of the market. In this convocation of the Government, we have the greatest support ever, and this is the moment when we need to set our priorities and show the commitment of the University to stand with the Government and the needs of the economy with its total capacities, technical and human, so that we can all build a better society for generations to come. after us, because these are not processes that can be completed now and immediately. These are generational processes, and we will be the bearers of those changes”, stated, among other things, the rector.
At today’s meeting, one of the conclusions was the increase of the enrollment quota for this study program from 60 to 100 full-time students, the support of the Sarajevo Canton Government in retaining professional staff, the engagement of industry experts in the field of practical teaching, as well as increased support for the promotion of the study program in cooperation with representatives of the IT industry.
The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of the Canton of Sarajevo, in cooperation with the competent institutions, continue activities to improve the quality of education in the Canton of Sarajevo. From 2022/2023. study year, they start the Scholarship Program for students of teaching faculties, for which funds in the amount of 200,000 KM have been allocated. This is the first time that the issue of missing teaching professions is dealt with by the ministry in a systematic and planned manner.
“The goal is to use certain measures to help solve the lack of teaching staff of certain profiles in the schools of the Canton of Sarajevo, and at the same time to encourage the most successful students with a high school diploma to enroll in teacher study programs in greater numbers.
In this sense, we are pleased to inform you that the Canton of Sarajevo will in the academic year 2022/2023. to provide scholarships to students who enroll in study programs in the framework of which staff are trained for teaching professions that are in short supply,” said the relevant ministries. On the territory of Sarajevo Canton for 2022/2023. year, the following teaching occupations were identified as deficient: IT teacher/professor, mathematics teacher/professor, physics teacher/professor, German language teacher/professor, and technical culture teacher and preschool education teacher. These occupations were declared deficient based on the data of the Employment Agency, as well as the analysis of the teaching staff employed in these areas in primary and secondary schools, and based on the assessment of the future needs of schools and data from the EMIS information system. It is foreseen that a needs analysis will be made for each subsequent year and that a student scholarship program will be made based on it, in accordance with the economic needs of society, it was pointed out.
The public will be informed in a timely manner about the number of provided scholarships according to the specified teacher profiles, the amount of scholarships, as well as the criteria for ranking candidates.
