Department of Mathematics is one of five departments of the Faculty of Science and has been part of the University of Sarajevo since 1950. Activities of the Department are educational and scientific. As a part of the educational activities we offer high-quality study programmes in the field of mathematics and computer science.

Study programmes are organized in three cycles 3 + 2 + 3 in line with the Bologna principles. After successful completion of the first cycle of studies lasting three years students receive an academic title Bachelor of Mathematics / Bachelor of Mathematics - Mathematics Education / Bachelor of Mathematics -  Mathematics and Informatics Education / Bachelor of Mathematics - Applied Mathematics / Bachelor of Mathematics - Software Engeenering in dependence on the main direction of their studies. After an additional two years of the second cycle of studies, the title of Master of mathematics / Master of applied mathematics / Master of software engineering is awarded.

1st (first) cycle of studies includes five parallel three-year long programs:

  • Theoretical Mathematics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Theoretical Computer Science
  • Mathematics Education
  • Mathematics and Informatics Education

Upon graduation undergraduate students receive one of the following titles from the University of Sarajevo:

  • Bachelor of Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Mathematics-Applied Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Mathematics-Software Engeenering
  • Bachelor of Mathematics- Mathematics Education
  • Bachelor of Mathematics-  Mathematics and Informatics Education
Upon the completed program, students can immediately enrol in a master program.

2st (second) cycle of studies includes four parallel two-year long programs:

  • Theoretical Mathematics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Theoretical Computer Science
  • Mathematics and Informatics Education

Upon graduation graduate students receive one of the following titles from the University of Sarajevo:

  • Master of  Mathematics
  • Master of  Mathematics - Applied Mathematics
  • Master of Mathematics - Software Engeenering
  • Bachelor of mathematics -  Mathematics and Informatics Education

3st (third) cycle of studies includes two parallel three-year long programs:

  • Natural Sciences and Mathematical Education
  • SEE Doctoral Studies in Mathematical Sciences
After the successful completion of the "Joint Doctoral study program in natural and mathematical sciences in education, Study program - Mathematics Education" candidate obtains the following title
  • Doctor of Mathematical Sciences in Education

After the successful completion of the "Doctoral study program in mathematical sciences in South East Europe" candidate obtains one the following scientific titles:

  • Doctor of Mathematical Sciences
  • Doctor of Computer Sciences,

depending on the chosen field of study.

All courses are sorted in groups (clusters), which are the responsibility of some Division of the Department of Mathematics. Thus, the Department has the following divisions:

  • Analysis
  • Algebra and Geometry
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Probability and Statistics
  •  Theoretical Computer Science

Teacher training Teaching at the Department of Mathematics is organized in three ways:

  •  Lectures
  • Auditorial Exercises
  • Laboratory Exercises

Lectures provide theoretical concepts of the subject, which are elaborated through concrete examples and assignments in exercises. Laboratory exercises are organized in those cases when it is necessary to help students to gain practical knowledge through work in laboratories. This mainly applies to subjects in the field of theoretical computer science and applied mathematics.

Students at the Department of Mathematics have or will have in the near future on their disposal following laboratories:

  • General Laboratory for Computer Science (IT Centre),
  • Laboratory for Computer Networks and Architecture,
  • Laboratory for Parallel Computing and Optimization,
  • Laboratory of Applied Mathematics.

Practical work on computers in the computer lab is organized in accordance with the highest standards. This is strictly adhered to the rule that every student has secured his own position, which is rare in other faculties of the University of Sarajevo. Job opportunities for graduates of the Department of Mathematics are numerous, so that almost all students immediately after graduation quickly find employment. The best students are offered the possibility of employment at the Faculty as collaborators in teaching process (teaching assistants).

Students who complete teaching direction of study very easily find employment as teachers or professors of mathematics and / or informatics in primary and secondary schools. Students of other majors are offered a large number of possible places where they can find employment outside of education, among which we mention only the most significant:

  • Banks,
  • Software companies,
  • Financial institutions,
  •  Insurance companies,
  • Statistics institutes,

A number of other institutes that have a need for mathematical modelling. To conclude, it should be noted that a significant number of graduates of the Department of Mathematics today work as leading experts in the prestigious software companies, insurance companies and banks, in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in other countries. Many of the former students of the Department of Mathematics successfully continued post-graduate and doctoral studies at prestigious universities around the world.

Why study at the Department of Mathematics?

Mathematics as a scientific discipline acts fascinating and is positioned on the top of the pyramid of knowledge. It is a set of ideas that are themselves beautiful enough to engross human attention. It is impossible to imagine any serious scientific discipline without mathematics.

Mathematics occupies a very important place in modern science in which very complex and difficult problems are often solved by reducing them to the mathematical expressions, formulas and equations whose resolution can come up with solutions.

Job opportunities for graduates of the Department of Mathematics are numerous, so that almost all the students immediately after graduation quickly find employment. The best students are offered positions at the Faculty. Students whose major is in mathematical education and teaching easily find employment as teachers or professors of mathematics and / or computer science in primary and secondary schools, and students of other majors are offered a number of places outside educational sector, such as: banks, software engineering house..

Mathematicians and computer scientists are among rare experts who have no problem to find a suitable job.
